Size [Imperial]: 3.5 x 5 in. With Frame: 13.5 x 15 in. Price: £350 This delightful watercolour is a small and delicate study attractively set off by a strong oak frame. The initials, colouring and subject matter possibly suggest (Sir) Frank Brangywn (1867 - 1956), whose works are displayed in numerous museums and were the subject of a retrospective at the RA in 1952; but I remain doubtful. email: patrick@worksofart.org.uk

Price £145 The signature (which is faint) has the initials ARCA (Associate of the Royal College of Art) after the artist's name and it is plain that the painter was talented. Price: £975 The eye is drawn into this painting between the trees, towards and then beyond the figures in the middle distance, as doubtless the artist intended. Price: £450 Thanks to Simon Ollivant for advising that the view in this painting is towards the isles of Rhum and Eigg as seen from a cove just off the road between Arisaig and Mallaig. Mary Holden Bird A watercolourist whose work was exhibited at the Royal Academy, and seems to be becoming increasingly popular. Mary Bird studied at Heatherley's School of Fine Art and went on to show at Fine Art Society, where she had frequent one-man shows, RA, RSW (Royal Scottish Watercolour Society), RBA (Royal Society of British Artists) and a Paris salon. Confusingly the backboard has both "Frederick Clark" and "Frederick Clarke" written on it together with the date 1860. With Frame: 18 x 22 in Price: £650 William Callow One of the great Victorian watercolourists his life is well documented. Callow spent much of his youth abroad but in 1842, the year of this painting, took the lease of a London property. Jan Reynolds in "William Callow" p. 80 states that 1842 "marked an advance in the establishment of the individual style of Callow although it is still possible to detect a very positive influence from T. S. Boys (Thomas Shooter Boys) in some work from this date." In 1842 Callow also began giving drawing lessons in England ( in Paris he had been drawing master to the family of Louis Phillippe) - at which he appears to have been very successful. He visited Madeley Manor, Staffordshire twice in order to give lessons to Miss Crewe the sister of Lord Crewe. A label on back indicates that the painting was displayed at Appleby Bros. St James in its autumn 1965 exhibition. Callow's works are in museum collections in Bristol, Dublin, London (the Wallace Collection and the V & A), Manchester, Reading and Sydney. |
