WILLIAM FREEMAN 1853 - 1935
A Victorian and early twentieth century watercolourist, now better
appreciated.
I am delighted to be able to offer a substantial number of Freeman's
works.
He was born in Camberwell (then a part of Surrey) and lived and
painted mainly in the south-west of London all of his adult life.
Many of his works feature views of Surbiton and Richmond, which
views almost always include trees. Whilst some of his works are
a dark, the majority are light and many are vibrant.
Although a skilled watercolourist William Freeman was unusual
in that he did not much believe in selling his work. According
to the Dictionary of Neglected Artists (1880 - 1950), this may
well be the reason that he is not better known. Certainly his
work is now more widely known and appreciated in part, no doubt,
to "World of an Artist - the Life of William Freeman".
The book is still in print. It was written by Gwendoline Freeman,
his grand-daughter and great admirer. She also seems to have been
the family member who collected and kept his work. It is from
her that this collection comes. Two of the watercolours shown
on the site are illustrated in the book.
